Step behind the Iron Bars
Constructed in 1833 was originally called Provincial Penitentiary of Upper Canada Province. The facility consisted of a single, large limestone cell block containing 154 cells in 5 tiers. When completed it was the largest public building in Upper Canada at 8.6 hectares on Lake Ontario.
Cell size 2.4' wide - 8' deep - 6.7 ' high. Surrounded by exterior fence 12' high.
The limestone will certainly get into your bones as you walk through the corridors.

For the first 99 years, women were incarcerated within its wall, although segregated from male population. Children as young as 8 yrs old were also incarcerated in the early days.
Riots Wreak Havoc
Kingston Pen experience three major riots, 1932, 1954, 1971.
1954- Prisoners destroyed the iconic grand dome
1971- Involved the taking of hostages, inmate deaths, extensive damage

The end of an era
Brutal conditions were outlined in the rules and regulations of the institution. Among them, a stipulation for inmates to “preserve unbroken silence,” meaning they “must not exchange a word with one another under any pretence whatever.” They also could not “exchange looks, wink, laugh, nod or gesticulate to each other. Disobeying, meant: “Corporal punishment will be instantly inflicted.”
In 2012  the federal government announced  it would cease operations due to the aging infrastructure and in Sept 30th 2013 inmates were moved to other locations.

What a bone chilling feeling going through the gates of this maximum security prison! Knowledgeable guides, that served as former guards, corrections officers, having spent at least 30 years working at the Pen, tell their powerful stories of those notorious facts and figures.

Upper Canada Village - a step back in time

Picture
Upper Canada Village is a heritage park near Morrisbourg, Ontario, depicting a 19th-century village.
Ten communities in the area, known as "The Lost Villages" were saved part of the project's heritage preservation plan. Many of the buildings in Upper Canada Village were transported directly from the villages to be flooded. Upper Canada Village endeavours to depict life in a rural English Canadian setting during the year 1866. Featured at the site are over 40 historical buildings, including several working mills (woollen mill, grist-mill and sawmill) and trades buildings (blacksmith, tinsmith, cabinetmaker, cooper, bakery, cheese-maker) all demonstrated by staff dressed in clothing of the period.
Go back to the 1860s and spend a day with the villagers!

Italian Adventures in Picturesque Positano - the smell of Lemon & Salt
I was lucky to explore the Amalfi Coast as I was shooting a Destination Wedding at the time. Breathtaking winding narrow vistas with houses tumbling down to the glamorous beach.
A southern-Italian holiday feel about the place, with pretty villas bathed in a golden light and bougainvilleas hanging over terraces like exotic jewels.
To explore Positano you must scale steep flights of stairs, inhaling the scent of lemons along the way, it will be totally worth the effort.
Enchanting paradise! A place unlike others, I will never forget.
A colourful cliffside village to make the gloomiest person happy.

A Victorian House filled with treasures in the heart of Vankleek Hill
The Gingerbread Capital of Ontario.
Picture
History etched all over these priceless items. Eye-catching rare, exquisite, and curious relics can be found in all corners of this historic BnB.
This
elegant two storey century  home is certainly worth the visit, a perfect place to relax and experience a taste of Victorian Era.
In 1853 this lot was purchased by members of the Loyal Orange Order for the sum of 13 pounds.
In that same year, the Loyal Orange Lodge Order no. 214 was built.

For over 150 years, the building remained in use as a meeting place for the Orange Lodge members. The second floor was the meeting room and the caretaker lived on the ground floor. In recent years, the Vankleek Hill Lodge retired.
Now a charming BnB offering its guests a taste of Victorian ambiance.

A tragic love story behind Boldt Castle

8/11/2018

George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size castle in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island.
The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise.

In January 1904, tragedy struck. Boldt telegraphed the island and commanded the workers to immediately “stop all construction.” Louise had died suddenly. A broken hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved. Boldt never returned to the island, leaving behind the structure as a monument of his Love.
A major landmark, now restored and open to the public, boat tours from both the U.S. and Canada stop at Heart Island. Worth the visit! Heart Island NY.

In search of Art in a collection of broken ceramics!
Rejected pots find their resting place in a huge container as they get toppled by multiple layers of broken art work. I could not resist getting closer with an urge to piece the puzzle, and mend what is broken.
There is so much colour, texture, and details in things that are shattered, if you look closer you can certainly isolate the ones that stand out and bring them back to life in whole new way.

Flowers & Feelings

In addition to their beauty and wonderful scents, flowers are also a traditional and articulate way to convey your message. Flowers are subjects that lend themselves quite well to being picked and photographed. As Flower Photography can be challenging, it is equally rewarding being without a doubt one of the most photographed subjects. We are surrounded by them, and as they show-off their wide range of colours, shapes, and sizes there are those that will stand out and catch your eye. Looking closely into nature, certainly flowers will grab my attention as there is just something about the inherent beauty of a flower that provides drama and interest and a touch of unique personality.
Here is a small collection captured at the Montreal Botanical Gardens.
